RIVER FICTION STORY

As the sun set on the School of Fish, the seventh-fish schoolteacher named Albert Finn packed up for the day. But just as he was leaving, his emergency shell-phone started beeping. Mr. Finn knew that it was go time. He swam to where the beeps were coming from to find a Longnose Gar gaining on its prey, a clownfish.

“HELP!” screamed the clownfish, whose name was Josie. Mr. Finn quickly used his superpowers to save Josie before she met her end.

“Thank you Mr. Finn!! That mean Gar tried to kill me everyday. He was my main predator.” Mr. Finn humbly nodded and swam away, only to find a Dicyema koshdai feasting on a Sepioteuthis just around the corner.
“EVIL PARASITE! HELP ME!” shouted the Sepioteuthis named Gertrude. Mr. Finn used his powers to shrink the Dicyema until he was down to the size of a molecule. Gertrude shrieked out 20 “thank you’s” before swimming happily away. The next day, Mr. Finn went out for a little morning swim. As he marveled at the beautiful day, his swim took him to the southern river edge. As he watched the sights, a deer appeared to get a drink. As Mr. Finn looked on, some burdock seeds fell from the deer’s soft fur onto the ground, later to become plants along the river bank.
“Classic commensalisms” sighed Mr. Finn, reliving what he had tought his class in the School of Fish last month. On the way home from his calming walk, Mr. Finn saw his friend Gary, a rainbow trout.
“Why hello Gary!”
“Hello Albert! I’d like you to meet a new friend of mine, LouAnne. She is a cleaner who will be living with me from now on. I’m going to give her an easy meal and protection from predators, while she gets rid of annoying parasites that come along.” The three conversed until Mr. Finn knew that he had to get home. Later that night as he lay in bed, he thought of all the symbiotic relationships he had witnessed lately, and how they all impacted his world.
